I think a huge trend we all need to be aware of is the current phenomenon of “sexting”. If you are unfamiliar with the phrase, it is basically taking and/or sending a nude picture via text message. I have read several newspaper articles that report teenagers who have sent a sext-message as high as 1 in 3. If Gollnick/Chinn report that nearly 50% of high school seniors in 2005 said they were sexually active (353) it is safe to assume that the number of students in 2010 who take and send a nude picture of themselves is going to raise above that level. What makes this trend worse is the negative outcome that often accompanies it. You can already imagine the situation: A girl takes a picture and sends it to her boyfriend, who in two weeks time (when they break up) texts the picture to half of the school. The girl is shamed beyond what she can handle. I read an average of two newspaper articles a month last spring about high school girls who committed suicide because a sexual picture of them had been passed around school. In an effort to crack down on this epidemic authorities have, in some cases, started charging students with production and/or distribution of child pornography – and they are therefore being labeled as sex offenders. As in, they post a sign on your door and you cannot get into college. I have been trying to convey to my students that this is serious business and a birthday gift for their boyfriend or girlfriend could actually ruin their life. I honestly do not think that students realize the implications of what they are doing. Just as Kelly suggested in her post about internet source reliability, I think that teachers should educate students about responsible use of technology. In a conversation with my students today about legal and responsible use of technology the most common response of defense about illegal activity was, “Well, why does my computer (or other electronic devise) have those capabilities on it if I’m not allowed to use it?” My response was, “My car does 120mph, but just because I have the technology to do so does not mean it is safe, legal or responsible.”

I am in, but I can't seem to find the place to create a new post. I only see dashboard and signout at the top righthand side of the blog. This is my test to see if I can post as a comment.

This is my first time blogging. It seems like it's pretty similar to the springboard discussion boards...

I'm trying to figure out how all this works. This is a very interesting idea that gets us all involved in something that I'm sure some of our students do ... blogging. I'm glad to get to try this out!
